First Day of School: I'm a Pretty Big Deal (For Today...)

From the desk of Jen Taylor
September 2nd, 2014

Dear Fellow Parents,

I’d like to take a minute to address a common occurrence among many of us… the one where we all get drunk on determination and certainty at the beginning of each school year. Determined to stay organized... certain we can do it all differently this time around.

Who the hell are we kidding?  We've totally got this!

I’m writing this post because…well…not to brag, or anything, but so far this school year my track record for being on the ball and ultra-organized has been immaculate.

Also... yesterday was the first day of school.
Let’s pretend that’s irrelevant...

Typically, right around the time all the homework starts coming in, a barrage of overwhelm floods my rational mind which sends my brain into data overload.

From that point on the whole system crashes and teachers be like...

I’m not a work-horse-mom.
I've tried to be....
It ends in yelling and tears....mine...theirs...the Neighbors'... (who are no longer neighbors-- can't figure out why)

I can totally be a work-horse-mom for short spurts-- but anything above and beyond a three week span is simply not maintainable for me.

I’ve always admired those who, like clockwork, seem to run on the same schedule and system day in and day out without falter.

There are a few reasons it never works out so well for my household. We’re the kind of family that's made up of a whack of people who get bored...

Bored…and distracted.

Very...
easily...

It should be mentioned that I use to be a pretty organized person--that was, before I had to organize shit for people other than myself--essentially, that means I was successful at maintaining organized drawers, an organized purse and an organized schoolbag since I went being someone's kid, to having my own kid in a matter of 20 grueling-no one could have prepared me for them- labor hours. One way or another, this year I'm pulling up the bootstraps--do or die, I'm determined to find a system and schedule that works for all of us!

I woke up yesterday morning and got all up in my ♫“Oh Happy Day!”♫

...because, let's face it... most kids take at least 2 weeks before they complain of summer boredom-- Mine...are bored two freaking minutes after they get off the bus on the last day of school.

Also...The 2014/2015 school year was headed for us, and this time... I was ready for it!

This is pretty much how the entire day went down...

Waking up…

At the bus stop…

Getting home (alone) from the bus stop…

Notice everything is clean and organized….

It dawns on me….

Hold crap…

I’m bloody organized!

I

AM
ORGANIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I proceed live out the rest of my day as responsible and fabulous parent…

Then the kids get back...and well, you know how it goes when they walk in from their first day of school…

How the old me would have handled it...

But the new and improved me stepped up...

(I said never said anything about enjoying it.)

Nonetheless...

For today, I'm feeling pretty unbeatable to say the least.
